Here's a shocking fact: DNA has helped convict thousands of criminals and has exonerated more than 200 wrongfully convicted people. (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/19/us/19DNA.html?_r=1)
While I need to find out some more hard facts about wrongful convictions, just looking at this semi-statistic alone is disturbing. Assuming "thousands" literally means "thousands" and not tens or hundreds of thousands, then we have a ~1:10 ratio of convictions to PROVEN wrongful convictions, not wrongful charges. This is an absurdly high ratio of error and would not be acceptable anywhere. Things like the Innocent Project are not enough - we have got to stop putting innocent people in jail.
